The spire of Christ Church in Old City with the Ben Franklin Bridge in the background, taken by staff photographer Peter Tobia, January 22, 2004.
An active Anglican Episcopal parish since 1695, Christ Church is an integral part of American History and of the City of Philadelphia. The tower and steeple, financed in part by lotteries managed by Benjamin Franklin, was completed in 1754. Navigators on ships used the steeple as a reference point. Seven signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried in the Christ Church grounds, and Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, and George Washington were all church members.
